What to Do When You Find Water Damage in Your Office or Commercial Building

Water is the fundamental building block of life on earth. It’s our planet’s most abundant resource and we literally can’t live without it. But if you’ve ever discovered water damage in your office, you’ve likely spent time cursing its mere existence.

Bursting pipes, summer storms, and faulty appliances all can lead to water damage. Regardless of the cause, the end result is a problem you want to address quickly. Commercial water issues can be especially problematic because most office and commercial buildings are not occupied 24 hours a day. So the lag time between when the event occurs and when the damage is discovered can sometimes be significant and lead to larger problems. In this blog post, we’re going to explain the actions to take when you discover water in your office or commercial building.

Step 1: Identify the Source of Your Office Water Damage

This is a ‘safety first’ situation. Before you even think about cleaning up the mess, ensure that electricity is turned off and you’re using proper gear like gloves and water boots to investigate the cause of the water issue.  If your water damage was caused by a storm, it will likely be pretty clear to you. But if it was caused by a burst pipe or a leaking appliance, it may be less obvious.

Step 2: Stop the Inflow of Water

Once you’ve identified the issue, you need to take steps to prevent more water from damaging your office and creating a bigger problem. If it was storm damage, this could be difficult and dangerous to do before the storm passes. You may be better off waiting.

If it’s a pipe that’s burst, your first step toward mitigating the issue is turning off the water main. Then call a plumber immediately. The plumber will come into your office building, identify the burst pipe, and fix it.

If you’ve identified a faulty appliance, determine whether or not it has a water supply. If it does, stop the flow of water to the appliance and remove the water supply. If it doesn’t, you’re likely dealing with a refrigerator or freezer. Before moving the appliance out of the area, soak up as much standing water as you can from inside of it. If you attempt to move it without removing any water contained inside, you could end up with a bigger issue on your hands. Once you’ve stopped additional water from leaking, it’s time to decide if you want to repair or replace the appliance.

Step 3: Remove Any Valuable or Susceptible Materials from the Area

While stopping the water from damaging your office building, you also want to manage the rescue of any material from the debris that has sustained water damage or is in danger of sustaining damage. Before you do, check out our Quick Action Safe Water Clean-Up Tips at the bottom of this page.

Focus on items susceptible to water damage. This can include computers and other tech components, important files and paperwork, wooden furniture, or anything else that doesn’t play well with water. Get it out of the space and into an area where it can begin the drying process. Remember that after a water issue, there will also be increased moisture in the air. That moisture can be just as damaging to your space and materials as standing water.

Step 4: Call Sams for Office Water Damage Restoration

If water damage isn’t dealt with quickly, the potential for far more serious damage is high. As you work on the rest of these measures, you want to contact the professionals at Sams. We offer water damage restoration services 24 hours a day, every day of the year.  We work with all insurance companies using required industry standard software to mitigate your water damage. We have exceptional relationships with St. Louis area insurance companies and can guide you through your claims process. And if your company’s insurance policy doesn’t cover water damage restoration, we will quickly provide you with a competitive proposal.

Time is of the essence when dealing with office water damage, so our team’s first move is a thorough inspection and assessment. We’ll provide an honest and complete picture of the extent of the damage and the work needed to repair it. We then remove and dispose of debris and move furniture as needed to mitigate additional damage.

We use specialized tools to detect moisture in building materials, extract water from the damaged area, and apply anti-microbial disinfectant to prevent mold and mildew. Throughout the process we use our structural and drying equipment to minimize the potential for mold growth, keeping you informed the whole time. Once the area is completely dry, we can provide carpet repairs as needed and advise on required construction repairs.

There’s nothing pleasant about discovering office water damage. But it’s good to know there’s help available when you do. Contact Sams at 636-949-8229 24/7 to reach a team member available 24/7 to answer the call to provide reliable and safe water damage restoration services for your office or commercial building.  We cannot stress enough that our team members are there for you every step of the way during this crisis, even if it is in the middle of the night or early in the morning.

How to Get Your House Looking Its Best Before the Holidays

Family is gathered once again for the holidays. The house is filled with the smells of delicious family favorite foods on the table. There’s football on the TV in the living room. Grandma and Grandpa talk, and everyone listens to stories of holiday traditions from their childhood. It sounds so peaceful and idyllic, doesn’t it?

I suppose it does if your only responsibility is to show up with a smile. But if you’re the one responsible for preparing the meal, buying presents, and cleaning the house so that everyone else can bask in the holiday magic, it probably sounds exhausting.

The holiday season can already be a stressful time with responsibilities that go above and beyond the usual. The idea of making your entire house shine to provide a perfect canvas for the holidays to be painted on can be downright overwhelming.

In this blog post, we’re going to provide five tips for getting the most out of the time you have available to clean for the holidays.

Tip #1: Have Your Carpets, Area Rugs, Tile Flooring and Upholstery Professionally Cleaned Before the Holidays

Nothing quite matches the “Wow” factor of professionally cleaned floors and upholstery, especially if it’s been a while since the last time it was done. With professional help focused on your floors, you’ll be able to direct your attention elsewhere knowing one of the biggest projects is taken care of.

The Sams team is here to get your carpets, area rugs, tile flooring, and upholstery looking as fresh as possible for your guests this holiday season.  We are only a click or phone call away to get your scheduled.

Tip #2: Repair Damaged Carpet and Remove Stains

Many people don’t realize it, but replacement isn’t your only option for overcoming stained or damaged carpet.  In addition to carpet cleaning, Sams can also repair damaged carpet and remove stubborn stains. We’ve seen customers amazed at our technicians’ ability to repair seams, burns, and snags. We’ve taken on spots and stains that customers have all but given up on, and gotten the carpet looking as good as new.

We can help with damaged or stained carpet before the holidays, but make sure you contact us early to ensure availability.

Tip #3: Break Up the Work into Smaller Tasks

There is an undeniable satisfaction that comes with starting and finishing a job all in the same day. But that can also be overwhelming, and lead to that big job being put on the backburner until it’s an emergency.

Instead, make a list of all the cleaning tasks you need to get done and prioritize them. As breaks arrive in your busy holiday schedule, pull out the list and pick an item or two to check off. Tackling your holiday cleaning activities in 30-, 60-, or 90-minute chunks can make the process way more manageable and help ensure it actually gets done.

Tip #4: Focus Your Attention Where it Matters Most

Of course, in a perfect world, you’d have time to scrub the entire house top to bottom to prepare for visitors. But unless any of them will be overnight guests, most of your holiday company will only see a portion of your home. So while we don’t encourage the “sweep and hide” method long term, the bulk of your attention should be on the parts of your home that will receive the most traffic: kitchen and dining room, main living area, and any nearby bathrooms. Bedroom and closet doors can be closed if need be.

Tip #5: Hire a Cleaning Company

Sometimes even these tips aren’t enough. That’s ok. Research local cleaning companies and find someone to help prepare your house for the holidays. Read reviews online to make sure you’re hiring someone you can trust. Better yet, ask close family and friends for a referral.  Get an estimate up front to avoid unexpected charges. Even if ongoing cleaning services aren’t in your budget, there’s no better time than the holidays to treat yourself to some much-needed one-time support.

If you’re preparing for visitors this holiday season, make Sams your first call. We’ll take on your flooring and upholstery, two of your biggest holiday house cleaning projects, so you can enjoy the season and time with family.

5 Ways to Get Indentations out of Carpet

It’s happened to all of us. You decide to rearrange a living room or bedroom. You slide a dresser here and a bed or sofa over there. You love the new layout, but your furniture’s left little reminders of where it used to be in the form of indentations in your carpet.  Or perhaps you’ve moved into a new home only to find the sellers’ furniture left you little reminders that you’re not the first person who has lived here.

No matter the situation, you want those little reminders gone, and you’d like to know how to get indentations out of your carpet once and for all.

The good news is there are several at-home remedies for carpet indentations that can work. In this article we will detail four strategies for removing carpet indentations, and the most likely way to fix it if these remedies don’t work for you.

Tip #1: Get Indentations Out of Carpet with a Vacuum

Let’s start with the least invasive solution possible. You’ve probably already tried this. But in case you haven’t, it’s a good place to start. Using a vacuum cleaner can help to bring indented areas of your carpet back to life. First, use your fingers to try to loosen up the fibers. Then attach the hose to your vacuum cleaner to apply strong suction to both the indented area of carpet, and the carpet around it. For less stubborn indentations, the vacuum might do the trick. If it doesn’t, move on to another potential solution.

Tip #2: Remove Carpet Indentations with a Hairdryer

This tip requires two things: a traditional hair blow dryer and a spray bottle full of water. Spray the carpet indentation with enough water to saturate it. Then use the hairdryer at the hottest setting to dry the wet carpet indentation. You should hold the hairdryer 4 to 6 inches away from the carpet, to avoid burning it. As you dry the carpet, use your fingers to fluff it up. The hair dryer can do for your carpet the same thing it does for your hair, removing flat areas and bringing back its volume.

Tip #3Get Rid of Carpet Indentations with Ice Cubes

This is the true “budget” method for removing carpet dents. If you have ice cubes, a sponge, and a nickel, you have all the supplies needed to employ this method to get indentations out of your carpet. Simply place an ice cube (or several ice cubes, depending on the size of the indentation) on the area you’re trying to revive. Let the ice melt in the dented area. The carpet will soak up the water and begin to rise. Use a sponge to blot away extra water, and then gently lift the indented carpet with a coin.

Tip #4: Use an Iron to Steam Away Carpet Indentations

Soak clean white cloth with water, and then wring out the excess. Lay the damp white cloth over the indentation in your carpet. Set your iron to a medium heat setting and hold it several inches above the damp cloth for up to a minute. Then use a coin to gently brush the carpet fibers back up.

Some people report success with this method even on the very difficult dents. But you must be careful. You run the risk of burning your carpets and causing severe damage if you put the iron on the wet cloth.

The Most Effective Solution: Have the Carpet Professionally Cleaned to Remove Indentations

One of the above solutions might work for you. But there’s one solution that’s most likely to work: a professional carpet cleaning from Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs.  Not only will the Sams team do their very best to remove the indentations in your carpet left by heavy furniture, we’ll also remove years of dirt and wear to restore the carpet in the entire room (or your entire home). If you’re moving in or rearranging a new space, let the Sams team make the carpeting a clean and beautiful canvas for your home or room design.

It’s important to note that not all indentations can be removed. If the carpet is old and furniture hasn’t been moved in a long time (10 or more years, for instance), the indentations may be permanent. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost. There are other ways to fix the situation with carpet repairs. Or, you may need to replace the carpet altogether.

Have any questions? Ready to schedule your professional carpet cleaning? Call the Sams team today at 636-949-8229 or schedule online! We’ll leave your home with fresh, clean carpet without all those pesky indentations from your furniture.

Pet Friendly Workplaces – Sams has your carpet cleaning needs covered!

It has never been more common to have a pet friendly work environment. Many companies are jumping on to the trend and for a good reason. There is a great deal of evidence on how a pet friendly workplace can benefit employees and, in turn, their employers.

Pets in the workplace boost morale. They have been shown to reduce stress, bring coworkers together and help foster teamwork. The addition of cats and dogs extends beyond morale to the productivity and even the pockets of employees. Studies show that when employees are allowed to bring their dogs to work, they no longer have to pay for doggie daycare or walking services and don’t have to worry that Fido is trapped inside all day. In addition, customers enjoy the opportunity to interact with the pets in your workplace when they come to visit! It can enhance their experience and build positive sentiment about your company.

The benefits are clear, but it is important to keep in mind that a clean and inviting office is key to a thriving business. If you have made the choice to allow pets in the office, then making sure that your carpets and furniture are clean is essential.

Clean up any pet accidents immediately

There is no time like the present when it comes to stain and odor removal and even long-term damage. Blot up any moisture immediately to prevent damage to the carpet padding and sub flooring that lies beneath. In many cases, moisture will penetrate those layers, so you’ll want to call in our Sams team professionals to extract the debris and perform repairs as necessary.

 Make rules!

It’s important to have rules for all to follow and understand.  It’s not safe or practical to have pets that cannot adhere to basic rules or tend to cause continuous damage. If a pet is a repeat offender, it’s probably in the best interest for the pet to stay at home.

Schedule regular cleanings

This is the most important method for assuring that the office environment is well kept. Be sure to point out where accidents have occurred, and pet urine may be lingering below the surface so that it can be treated appropriately. Regular cleanings will not only take care of any tough to handle stains but will also remove hair and dander that will not budge with a vacuum. It will also remove unwanted odors and create a welcoming atmosphere for employees and customers.

At Sams we love our furry friends and we are proud to clean many pet friendly offices with our safe and effective methods. We would love to help you to make your offices a place filled with tail wags and smiles. Give us a call at 636-949-8229, or schedule your cleaning online today!

Preventing a Flood in Your Home While You’re Away on Vacation

Do you suffer from the post-vacation blues? We know it can be hard to leave the beach and head back to reality but imagine walking into a reality you really don’t want to deal with – a flooded home. This nightmare scenario happens more often than we would like to think and can be caused by numerous scenarios. While we hate to see this happen to one of our customers, we know that disasters strike when we least expect them and we are proud to be one call away 24 hours a day, 7 days a week when you need us.

Why do so many floods happen when away on vacation? The reality is, your home is no more susceptible to flooding when you’re on vacation, but when you are away for an extended period, a simple water leak can turn disastrous. We have worked with customers who left for vacation, only to return to a flooded home due to a toilet float that was not functioning properly. Something this simple can cause the tank to overflow and flood the entire second story, leaking through the ceiling and onto the floor below. Or, consider a leaking or burst washing machine hose. Washing machine hoses tend to be a big culprit when it comes to water leaks. A burst washing machine hose can quickly flood your home and cause a great deal of damage while you are away.

We’ve also seen flooded homes caused by a broken water filter system in the refrigerator, which left the family wading through water when they returned from a vacation. And of course, there’s  the classic sump pump malfunction during a rainstorm. These are all reasons that homes can flood and can lead to thousands of dollars in damage.

What can you do to prevent this from happening to you and leave you to have a worry-free vacation this summer?

  1. A quick total home inspection is important before leaving town. This will identify any potential issues. Include an inspection of your gutters to make sure they are properly functioning to remove all water away from your home.
  2. Test all of your supply lines. This is an easy way to make sure that there are no leaks that can get worse when your home is vacant. Remember a tiny leak adds up over time, so while a little drip might not be a big deal for a few hours, it can lead to a lot of water damage over a week’s time.
  3. If your home has a sump pump system, you should test it before heading out on vacation. The test is simple to perform: simply pour a bucket full of water into the sump pit to assure that the pump is removing water and not overflowing.
  4. One sure way to prevent most flooding is to shut off the main water valve to your home. This will assure that water is not going to leak from a poor connection of hose to your sink or fridge. Make sure to test it once you shut it off by simply running the water in your sink.
  5. If you have a person coming to check in on your home you might not want to shut the water off, but you can still shut off the hoses to your toilets, sinks and appliances. We suggest that you have the person who is coming to get your mail and water your plants to also do a quick check of the home from the basement to the top floor. This is your best bet for making sure there are no issues.

Even with all of these preventive measures in places, unexpected water damage can still happen. In an event that you find yourself with a flood on your hands, Sams emergency water removal and restoration services are here to assist with clean-up and will get you and your home back in order in no time. Contact our 24/7 emergency service line at 636-949-8229 to quickly connect with our water restoration specialists.

Rethinking “Clean” in Your Workplace

We are all cautious and excited at the same time as stay-at-home orders are lifted and employees return to work.  Questions of employee and customer safety are at the forefront of everyone’s minds including with us at Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs. As business owners we all feel the importance of providing a feeling of safety to ease the minds of all as we navigate through this new era in the workplace. As we learn more with COVID-19 for the cleaning industry, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of an overall clean work environment for peace of mind and for prevention.

A well-maintained and cleaned workspace boosts morale, assures workers that every aspect of returning to work is being considered and diminishes allergens and germs.  Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs has been providing services throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area for over 35 years and we can be that vital part of the enhanced cleaning maintenance program with you.

Where to Start to Improve a Clean Work Environment

A clean approach starts with everyday precautions and regular cleaning of workspaces. Here are regular cleaning protocols that you may already have been doing or a great addition to your cleaning procedures:

  • A top-down cleaning approach that begins in high-traffic and frequent-use areas. This includes common areas, as well as components such as computer keyboards and mice which are among the top places for germs to gather. A great way to keep up is to have cleaning wipes or industry-specific cleaning products readily available for everyone to use throughout the day.
  • Other shared and frequently touched areas need daily attention. It is important to wipe down countertops and cabinets that are frequently used and touched. It can be easy to overlook hand railings and door handles which also needs regular cleaning.
  • Everyday vacuuming of floors and furniture are important procedures. For chairs and sofas, do not forget the hard arm rests, additional cleaning with safe furniture cleaning wipes or products is important.
  • Professional carpet and tile/grout cleaning ought to be performed on a frequent basis depending on how much foot traffic, how often you vacuum, unexpected spills, or just keeping up with a clean environment. At Sams, we will work with your staff to make the best determination of how often and coordinate together a strategic cleaning maintenance plan. Professional carpet and tile/grout cleaning not only ensure that carpets and tile/grout are thoroughly clean, but it also reduces long-term wear and tear and extends the life of your flooring.
  • HVAC filters and cleaning are essential for clean air flow and potentially reducing allergens. HVAC cleaning often reveals a variety of foreign objects and debris which can block air flow and put a strain on your system. If this is the case in your facility, consider air duct cleaning to remove the debris and provide an effective healthy clean air flow throughout your facility.

Let us not forget emergencies and unexpected occurrences happen.  It’s important to take immediate action to deal with water damage and flooding right away before mold growth can set in and before other situations that can lead into larger issues and damages.

At Sams, we continue to provide professional disinfecting services for businesses using a high-powered fogging disinfectant equipment to reduce the spread of germs.  Our team is happy to walk you through this process with you.

We spend a lot of time at work, which is why it is so important to ensure that business environments are clean and healthy. Sams offers a wide range of services and ready to work with you to build an enhanced cleaning strategic maintenance plan so that your facility can be the safest clean interior environment it can be. Contact us at 636-949-8229 or schedule online today!

Sams Disinfecting Services for COVID-19

For over 30 years Sams has offered Emergency Restoration Services around the clock to help our customers clean and disinfect their homes and businesses after an unexpected disaster. While these disasters typically involve events like a flooded basement, sewage overflow, or burst pipes, sometimes the situation calls for disinfecting a home or building after a serious illness. Today, we’re facing an illness more serious than the majority of Americans have ever faced – COVID-19.

As of Monday, April 6, Missouri Governor Mike Parson issued stay-at-home orders which limit all but essential workers and encourages social distancing. In addition, the Federal Government’s guidelines regarding social distancing have been extended through April/May. This has left the majority of our state’s schools, churches, office buildings, libraries, fitness centers and other large gathering spots empty (or nearly empty) as we weather this storm.

We’re all hopeful that this shall pass as quickly as possible. In the meantime, it’s important to have your buildings cleaned and disinfected to be ready when that time comes. The Sams team has the experience and the equipment as we have already started performing our deep cleaning and disinfecting services in the community.

The Process

The Sams disinfecting cleaning team is the last step in the process. We will work with you individually in preparing for us to arrive. We understand for us to meet the needs and requirements that are specific to each industry. To follow some overview guidelines we received from CDC, EPA, and the cleaning industry associations, we have a few steps to encourage:

  • All hard surfaces to be wiped down with disinfectant. This includes everything from tables, shelving, blinds, furniture, light fixtures, and more.
  • All carpeted areas to be vacuumed.
  • All other flooring to be swept and mopped with disinfecting cleaning solution.
  • Upholstered furniture, draperies and other fabrics have been vacuumed.

To assist with the above steps, the Sams team is equipped to deep clean and disinfect carpets, upholstery, air ducts, and tile.

We will then come in with our high-powered ULV disinfecting fogging application with an EPA Certified Board Spectrum Disinfectant and virucide to remove all contaminants from the air and surfaces. After disinfectant services have been performed, the space must remain unoccupied for a minimum of four hours.

Trust Sams, an Experienced and Certified Cleaning and Restoration Firm

Not only do we have more than 30 years of experience in restoration, Sams is also an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC) Certified Firm. We hold training and certifications in IICRC following the industry standards, which include but not limited to water restoration/disinfecting, sewage restoration/disinfecting, carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, carpet repairs, etc.

As such, we are working during this time as an essential business. As of March 20th, 2020 the IICRC along with the RIA (Restoration Industry Association) and NADCA (The HVAC Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Association) have written a letter to the Federal, State and Local Governments to certify all restoration and disaster recovery operations essential.

Doing the Job, and Following Safety Measures

Sams is working diligently to assure that all CDC guidelines are being followed, and we are constantly working to update our procedures to keep both our customers and clients safe.

Currently we are using the following process to perform an estimate or cleaning:

  • When we arrive at the job site, we meet the customer outside with safe social distancing. Sadly, this means no handshake for now.
  • The Sams team member wears a mask, gloves and booties to make sure he or she is protected.
  • We enter the unoccupied building to do our evaluation.
  • Once inside, we do not touch any items, we simply need to observe and take notes.
  • When the evaluation is completed, we electronically send the customer the evaluation/estimate.
  • If the customer is unable to leave the building, he or she can move into a room that we are not evaluating and keep the door closed to avoid contact.

At Sams, we love our community and are committed to both helping to reduce the spread of COVID-19 as well as our goal to provide a peace of mind to return homes, businesses, schools and gathering spots back to a clean and sanitary environment. We’re in this together, and look forward to a time of shaking hands and working face-to-face soon.

Make a Great First Impression this Winter: Carpet and Tile Cleaning Tips for your Business

Midwest winters can feel endless and unforgiving for all, including your floor coverings. As a business owner, first impressions matter and a dingy, worn out carpet and tile, makes for an unpleasant customer and workplace experience. Attending to your carpet and tile floors with a regularly scheduled professional cleaning from Sams will not only serve to make your place of business shine, but it will also extend the life of your floor coverings.

Winter Carpet and Tile Woes

Snow and ice are not nice! When people track in snow and ice, they not only bring in moisture that can cause subsurface issues, but they bring in small debris like pebbles, salt and sand from road and sidewalk treatments. Debris that get caught in carpet fibers act like sandpaper and slowly grind down the fibers when you walk, making your carpeting not only dirty, but noticeably worn. If you do not take the time to clean your carpets on a regular basis, this could end in a costly full office flooring replacement.

How to Minimize Carpet and Tile Damage Caused by Winter Grime

Vacuum your carpets and sweep tile floors regularly. In high traffic areas like entrances or hallways, it is important to clean daily. This will remove the salt, dirt and any small debris that wear down the carpeting and cause damage to tile over time.

In entrances and lobbies, it’s important to put down a durable floor mat that will allow clients to wipe their feet and take the initial blow of the shoe traffic. It’s not a bad idea to place one outside of the main entrance as well as directly inside of the doors. The mats will help to catch the winter ice and snow that can get tracked into your business, and other objects such as snow melt which can cause the worst of the damage to your flooring.  Make sure to vacuum/shake them often to remove a majority of the debris.

Schedule regular professional carpet and tile cleaning. This is your best weapon in fighting the battle. Again, the goal is not just to make your flooring appear clean on the surface, but to remove the sand, dirt, moisture and salt melt pellets that are ground into carpet fibers and into tile and grout when people walk on the floors. A professional cleaning from Sams uses state-of-the-art technology, and decades of expertise in fighting even the toughest dirt. We will help you keep the carpet and tile in your business clean and extend its overall life.

We look forward to speaking with you about how a regular, professional carpet or tile cleaning can benefit your business. Schedule your appointment online today, or call us at 636-949-8229.

Winter Water Hazards

We typically worry about flooding and water damage in the spring when winter run-off from snow melt spills into rivers and streams and makes for a wet and muddy few months. However, winter months also pose a risk of water damage to our homes. This risk is especially high in the Midwest with the constant variation in temperatures where we swing from a total white-out on a Monday to t-shirt weather by Wednesday.

At Sams we encourage our customers to be proactive and protect their homes from winter water damage.

Is snow in the forecast?

Take time to shovel any snow near basement egress windows, vents or areas that don’t have the best drainage. Removing snow from near your foundation will help to ensure that water does seep into cracks and cause water damage.

Got leaves in your gutters?

A clogged gutter can cause a host of problems, most notable they will not drain water properly from the roof away from your foundation. A clogged gutter can also fill with water and freeze which will damage the gutter itself and in some cases your siding and roof as well.

Is there ice buildup on your roof?

Make sure that snow and ice do not sit on your roof for too long. Most roofs are pitched to prevent snow from building up, but in the rare case it does it can cause issues when the base layer melts from the heat of your house and then freezes and thaws again. This can cause your shingles to be pushed up and create rot and eventually leaks.

Did you hook up your hose on a nice day to wash the car?

Don’t forget to disconnect it when you’re finished. Turn off all water to outside hoses and properly flush out any water to prevent freezing.

Do you have pipes along exterior walls?

If your pipes are in a vulnerable area where they could potentially freeze, wrap them with an insulating material to help ensure that they do not freeze and burst open.

Have you checked your sump pump lately?

We always recommend having a sump pump in your basement, especially in a basement with a finished area. But don’t just assume it’s working! Check on it regularly to make sure it’s pumping water out of the bucket and keeping it out of your home.
