Repair Your Carpet Tears, Stains and Ripples before the Holidays

We’ve recently experienced our first snowfall in the greater Saint Louis area and all of sudden it feels like the holidays are upon us. Gathering around the Christmas tree or in the family room to share holiday traditions is a wonderful way to make memories. At Sams we want to ensure that those memories are made on spotless like-new carpets, because let’s face it no one wants to sit on a dirty carpet on Christmas morning, or have an unsightly stain or tear in your holiday photos! That’s why now is the perfect time to have Sams take care of cleaning up stains, and repairing tears and ripples in all of your household carpet.

Don’t Replace Rippled Carpet – Let Sams Repair It!

If you’re looking at your carpet and notice that it’s starting to develop ripples, you’re not alone. In fact, modern carpets are manufactured with materials and backings that are prone to ripples. Most people think that when a carpet starts to ripple that it is time replace it – but that’s just not the case. You can save time and money by calling Sams! In most cases, we can use special tools and techniques to re-stretch your carpet and make it look good as new. Homeowners are often amazed at the results! And the great news is that your carpet will be smooth and ready for you to welcome family and friends to your home for the holidays without having to worry about anyone tripping on those inconvenient ripples.

Take Care of Carpet Spots and Stains

Perhaps you can’t wait to have Aunt Mildred and Uncle Harry staying at your house over the holidays, but the spots and stains on your carpet are keeping you from being as excited as you should be. They may be new, or they could be stubborn stains that you just haven’t been able to beat. Whatever the case, the Sams team of professionals has the knowledge and experience to properly dispose of these offenders. We have techniques and cleaners not available on your store shelves that may take care of your spots and stains. But sometimes a spot won’t be phased by cleaning (think spilled paint or splashed bleach). In this case, we can spot dye or even patch the carpet so it looks as good as new. When we leave, it will be in tip-top shape and you’ll now be proud to welcome Aunt Mildred and Uncle Harry.

Sams can make your carpets look like new with one visit from the yellow van. We use a state-of-the-art cleaning process to deep clean and restore life into your carpet. What Are Those Dark Carpet Stains Along My Walls?

Have you ever been vacuuming and noticed that there is a dark colored grime around the edges of your carpet? If you notice there are dark lines on your carpets located along the walls, around the air vents, or under the doors, you most likely have what we refer to in the industry as filtration soiling. Many homeowners experience this, and the great news is, there is a way to deal with it.

Filtration Soiling – what is it?

Filtration soiling is caused when air passes through the carpet as it escapes through the gaps between the subflooring or where the baseboard and the carpet meets. The air that passes through these gaps can deposit microscopic particles made up of dust, pollen, ash from a fireplace or even a candle. Any home with an HVAC system is subject to filtration soiling. The grimy buildup is a gradual process and the accumulation will slowly become visible, and the lighter your carpets are the more noticeable the issue will be.

Another culprit is soot from burning candles.  Yes, we know that many people love burning candles, but unfortunately, this practice can come with a consequence as soot from the candles causes filtration soiling.

How to Prevent it?

There are several things that you can do to help prevent the soiling. Make sure that your HVAC system is properly sealed at the connection points. You should also make sure that your house has been properly insulated so that air can flow in and out of your home.  In addition, it is important to change the filters in your HVAC system every 6 months or sooner directed by the manufacturers of the filters. Here are some other tips:

DO:

  • Seek higher quality candles. While candles made from soy or beeswax are said to burn cleaner, this isn’t always the case. Look for candles that are made with minimal impurities.
  • Read the instructions for any unique maintenance tips.
  • Get in the habit of trimming wicks to ¼ inch to reduce the release of soot.
  • Make sure your candle burns low and even for a cleaner burn.
  • Use a snuffer to extinguish the flame, which will reduce the emission of black smoke.
  • Open windows regularly to ventilate your home and avoid a mold or soot problem.
  • Choose unscented candles. The fragrance or aromatherapy oils used in scented ones create more soot. Diffusers are more effective when you want to scent your home.

DON’T

  • Use candles that feel soft and greasy. These tend to burn more smoke.
  • Burn candles near a draft. It might seem counterintuitive, but wind can disturb the flame and consequently create more soot.
  • Place candles in narrow-mouth containers. They restrict the airflow of a burning candle, leading to more soot emissions.
  • Leave candles unattended (though we’re betting your parents taught you that one long ago).

How to Remove the Soil Stains

Once you have noticed the soiling, and ensure that your HVAC system is properly sealed and your filters have been changed, you will need to have both your ducts and carpets professionally cleaned. We would not recommend trying to clean the carpet with a spot cleaner or without professional assistance. The soil is usually greasy and extremely fine in its composition and attempting to clean the stains without professional help will only lead to further carpet damage.

At Sams we offer both professional air duct cleaning and a specialized carpet cleaning procedure to remove all or most of the filtration soiling. As always, prevention is the best medicine, so as soon as you notice the build-up occurring, give Sams a call so that we may provide you with a FREE estimate. We will be sure to do our best to return your carpets to their original beauty.

Get to know Ed Brunner!

We love the opportunity to introduce you to the wonderful team members of Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs. Each and every one of them make it a great day at Sams, and make your home a place of clean, healthy carpet and flooring. This month, we’d like to introduce you to Ed, one of our wonderful technicians who prides himself turning carpets, rugs, tile and upholstery that might look tired and worn out into a new-again piece of “artwork” in your home. He has become one of the senior staff members and now not only has the pleasure of working hard for our customers, but also sharing his knowledge with his colleagues to assure they grow in their careers with Sams.

What is your role at Sams?

My main role I serve is that of cleaning technician – from carpet to tile and more. Each day I am presented with a new project and once I get to work and find out my tasks for the day, I get everything ready to go and head to the site. Most of my days consist of cleaning and repairs. Not only, do we clean carpet, but we also do a lot of tile and grout. At Sams we use cutting edge products to assure the job is done well, such as T & G which is a specialized soap that we put down that breaks up all of the dirt in the grout and tile. After that we use a brush that goes on our machine that scrubs it all of the tile. We finish up with a power wash and if the customer chooses, we do a sealer afterwards. It is amazing to see the transformations that I am a part of each day on the job.

What do you like about working at Sams?

I like being mobile and not being in an office every day. The best part of the job is the variety, and that I get to do different things which means that no day is the same – one day it can be tile, one day repairs and cleaning. Being out and about and meeting new customers every day, and helping them get the cleanest carpet and tile possible, is great. One thing I always try and tell new guys is that you can always count on your team members. Sams is like a family, everyone is hardworking, gets along and they’re there for you when you need them.

What makes working here fun?

Jeff and Susan assure that we have fun and feel appreciated at Sams…you’ll show up and there will be a cooler of goodies. Jeff and Susan are good people and they take care of you. They try and make it as fun as it can possibly be and that makes coming to work enjoyable.

What are your hobbies?

Anything to do with my kids. I have three young ones who are 7, 4, and 1. They are pretty much a full time job when I get out of here, but just like Sams, it is a fun job to have. It’s all-consuming as soon as I walk in the door all the way until I go to bed. We enjoy our time together and it is fun to watch them grow. The kids like water activities  so we go to Creve Coeur lake, Main Street St. Charles area by the river, sometimes down by the arch and Goose creek lake for swimming and fishing.

What do you like about the Sams Customers and their experience with you? What do you feel you bring to that experience?

Sams customers are very nice, appreciative, and loyal. I love to see a previous customer I recognize. I always try to do a thorough job and be friendly. It leaves them not only with a clean home, but with a great Sams experience. And the best part is when they request you back or tell their neighbors. I enjoy leaving a good impression, which makes me feel satisfied at my job.

What is the best about working with your peers and why?

Everyone is around the same age and we have similar interests. A lot of the guys have kids, so we get together outside of work. On weekends we’ll have bar-b-ques together. You know you work with great people when you want to spend your personal time with them.

Your greatest accomplishment with Sams?

I try to be an all-around good guy and help others. When I started and I knew nothing about carpet. Now I’ve worked here for years and I’m one of the senior technicians. I try and help new guys feel welcome and teach them as much as I can.

What do you want to keep learning about in the job?

There will never be a point where I know everything, which keeps it interesting. I try to keep an open mind that someone can teach me something I don’t know, or how to do something better or more efficiently. I’m on it rather than thinking I know it all.

Name 4 words that tell us about you?

Friendly, talkative, hardworking, loyal

I am proud to be a Sams employee and be part of a company that takes pride in treating its employees and customers very well.

Thank you, Ed, for taking time to share your Sams story! As you can tell, Ed loves working with customers and making their homes clean and beautiful. He and the entire Sams team would welcome an opportunity to do the same for your home. If you see Ed on your next cleaning, be sure to say hello!

Extend the Life of Your Carpet with Professional Cleaning

At Sams, we admittedly love carpets more than most, but can you deny that amazing feeling of walking on new or freshly cleaned carpet, or the beauty of a newly vacuumed room with straight and tidy lines? A clean carpet assures that your house is a place to gather with family and friends, or to kick back and relax in a comfortable and clean environment.

Why Carpet Cleaning Matters

If you can’t remember the last time you had your carpets cleaned, then it is most likely time to call Sams to schedule a professional cleaning! There are many reasons why having your carpet cleaned on a regular basis makes sense and in some cases is a must-do.

  1. Regular professional carpet cleaning will extend the life of your carpet. Clean carpets not only look better, they will last far longer. When you let a carpet get dirty, the dust particles that build up on the carpet fibers start to act like sandpaper and every time that you walk on the carpet, those particles wear down the carpet fibers and shorten the life or your carpeting. We recommend a professional cleaning at least once per year, but if you have small children or a large family, every six months would be preferable, especially in high traffic areas.
  2. Have a pet? We love our furry friends, but we also know the messes they can leave behind. That’s why frequent cleaning is a must in homes with pets. We would advise quarterly cleanings to assure that your carpet is free from pet dander, accident stains and odors are eliminated, and any debris that your pet tracked into your home is skillfully removed.
  3. If your carpet came with a warranty then having it cleaned professionally once per year is typically a must in order to maintain a valid warranty. While you need to check your warranty for specifics this is often something that is overlooked by home owners until it is too late.

In between cleanings

What can you do to get the most out of your carpet and enjoy a more hygienic home between cleanings? There are many things that will help your home stay fresh after the Sams team has cared for your carpet:

  1. Regular, Careful Vacuuming: We recommend vacuuming at least once a week, or more frequently (perhaps even daily) in high-traffic areas. When vacuuming, we suggest that you do it very slowly. While it might be tempting to rush through a room to get the job done quickly, it’s important that you slow down to allow the vacuum to do its job. Remember those stubborn dust particles that break down the fibers? The slower you vacuum, the more you assure that those particles will be released from the fibers and sucked into your vacuum.
  2. Spot and Stain Removal: If you spill something, blot it right away and call us for advice or to take care of the stain for you! Quick action is key, so start by working from the outside of the stain to the inside using a clean cloth. If you rub the stain, you will spread the grime and likely work it further into the carpet fibers. For wet spills, try using a stack of paper towels or a heavy clean cloth weighted down with a heavy object to absorb any moisture. The goal is to get rid of any residual moisture in the carpet to avoid mold.

If you have worked with Sams in the past, you likely have a bottle of our “Outta Sight” spot remover to clean up you spill. Avoid using any other types of carpet cleaning products as they can leave residue and cause more damage.

While your carpet might just seem like a floor covering, at Sams we see it as an important part of what makes your house a home and want to make sure that you get the most out of your investment. Regular carpet cleaning, along with the between-cleaning tips above, will ensure a safer, more enjoyable home environment for you and your loved ones.

Employee Spotlight: Jessica Burrows

“It’s a great day at Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs!” If you’ve called into our office and heard this greeting, there’s a good chance that Jessica is on the line with her welcoming voice. But her service and commitment to you doesn’t stop there. Jessica wears many hats at Sams! So when you see a yellow Sams van out on a job, you can be assured that Jessica played a role in making sure the process went smoothly from start to finish. And now, without further ado, we present to you the ever-helpful, hard-working, customer satisfaction expert – Jessica!

What is your role at Sams?

I am the administrative assistant at Sams, which means I manage a variety of tasks and responsibilities in the office. I answer the phones, update schedules, gather all the estimates and send out letters to the property managers at the apartment complexes we clean on a regular basis.

What do you like about working at Sams?

I think we can’t say this enough, but Sams is like a family! The environment is light-hearted and supportive which makes working here fun. I recently had a baby, and I was able to take time with my child on maternity leave and work with the other employees to get all of my tasks done so we did not miss a beat – that’s what any family would do!

What makes working here fun?

Just like a family we have so much fun joking around and spending time together, but we also pull together to get all of the work done. Like any job there can be stress, but the stress is eased by our fabulous team and the way that we all work to make each other’s jobs efficient.

What are your hobbies?

I adore spending time with my growing family. I have a 5-month-old and a 4-year-old who keep me very busy.  Some of our favorite things to do are going to the zoo, Grant’s farm, the park, and of course Cardinals and Blues games. In fact this year we took my son to his first Blues game!

What do you like about the Sams Customers and their experience with you?  What do you feel you bring to that experience?

One of the things that I love is working with our customers to ease them through the process when they call. I am usually the first person they speak to at Sams and when I pick up the phone, I want them to feel comfortable and happy. I like to think of everybody as being a family member of mine when they call.

What is the best about working with your peers and why?

I know that I said it before, but we are all like a family. This is one of the best parts of working for a locally owned family business – the values that Sams has are clear in the way we all work. When anyone’s going through anything, everyone jumps in to help. For example, if someone needs to go take some time off, we all work together to make that happen. We genuinely care about one another and are there to help in stressful times and to celebrate and joke during the rest of the time at work.

Your greatest accomplishment with Sams?

I feel like I have a lot of responsibilities and I am able to tackle them all. I am honored that Jeff and Susan trust me with all of my responsibilities on a daily basis and they know it will get done correctly. I know that I am valued as an employee and that makes coming to work an enjoyable experience. I have even had the opportunity to go with Susan to several conferences at the Chamber of Commerce.

What do you want to keep learning about in the job?

As we move to a more digital platform, I am learning how to manage that process and help make that transition seamless.

Name 4 words that tell us about you?

Honest, dependable, hardworking, friendly

Do you participate in any community/nonprofit organizations?

I am a proud member of the Bolivian society of St. Louis. My mom is from Bolivia and my grandfather founded the Bolivian society of St. louis.

A big thank you to Jessica for taking time to share her Sams story! We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to get to know the voice behind our “great day” greeting. Next time you call into Sams, be sure to say hello to Jessica!

Meet John Tucker

This week we took some time with our area rug specialist, Tucker to get all of the intimate details on what it’s like to work for Sams Carpet. We were so happy to hear that one of the best parts of his job is the people that he gets to work with on a daily basis here at Sams. Below, find out more on Tucker’s job, his life and what his most memorable experiences are here.

Q: How long have you been at Sams?

A: I started at Sams in October of 2015, so for 3 years.

Q: What exactly do you do as area rug specialist?

A: I do everything involved in the process except scheduling. We take the rugs out of the homes or businesses, and I also facilitate the pick-up and delivery once the rug is clean.

We have a rug plant (FrenchTown Rug Cleaning, a division of Sams) in which we run the rugs through a detailed cleaning process at the plant. After I carefully inspected the rug before giving back to customer, an office staff member calls the customer to make arrangements to picks the rugs up, or schedule for me to deliver the rug back to their home or business.

Q: Why is working at Sams different?

A: One thing that really stands out is how close everyone is at Sams. It’s like a family, and everyone sticks up for each other. If someone’s is having a bad day or a hard time, everyone tries to pick them up and make them feel better. It’s a nice clean friendly place to work, and the first job I’ve ever had that I like going to every day. I feel blessed, and on top of that it pays my bills.

Q: What is it like to work here?

A: It’s fun. Some days are rougher than others, but overall it’s really laid back, and so are the people I work with. You don’t ever hear people yelling or fighting and that’s one of the best parts of it.

Q: Do you have any memorable experiences from over the years at Sams?

A: The cool thing about this job is that you get to meet all different people, with different personalities, stories, etc. A month ago we were working on a woman’s home, and I was picking up the area rugs while another Sams tech was cleaning her sofa. It was an older couple’s home, and the lady snuck up behind the other tech scared him half to death. Those kinds of fun interactions with our clients make the job so much more personal.

Q: When you’re not busy at work, what do you do for fun?

A: I am a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues and love going to the games. When I can’t make it to the games, I catch them on TV all the time. I am also a father and I enjoy spending time outside with my son and go to the local parks.

A huge thank you goes out to Tucker for participating and sharing his Sams experience. Book him or one of our other amazing technician specialists to clean your home or business by calling 636-949-8229 to schedule an appointment.

Protecting Your Home from Water Damage

While April Showers will bring May Flowers, they can also bring big trouble for homeowners in Missouri.

Flooding can be a tragic experience for anyone but with a few simple steps and our phone number close at hand, you will be ready for the worst Mother Nature can throw at us.

  1. As the rains pick up and the weather warms, get outside and walk around your home.
    • Check gutters, drains and downspouts for debris.
    • Look for low areas around your foundation which may collect water. Try to fill these areas and slope away from the house.
  2. Check your sump pump and consider adding an inexpensive moisture alarm.
  3. Keep valuables and easily damaged items in your basement in plastic tubs as opposed to cardboard boxes.

Should water make its way into your home, don’t you worry. Sams Carpet Cleaning & Repairs is one call to our 24-hour live service line that will put you in touch with our team of trained and certified Restoration Specialists.  Restoration Specialists will assess your water damage, walk you through the claims process, and provide you with the latest in state of the art restorative drying techniques to leave your home back to its previous condition, clean, and safe.  For more information about our water damage restoration services, check out our page!

Meet Jake Custer

This month we’re featuring one of our fantastic technicians: Jake Custer! Jake has been with us for years and is a much-appreciate part of the Sams family. Let’s take some time to learn more about him!

Q: How long have you been at Sams?

A: I’ve actually been here nearly 10 years coming up very soon.

Q: How did you first hear about the job?

A: One of my friends was working at Sams and referred me to the job.

Q: What exactly do you do as a Technician?

A: Oh, a lot of things depending on the day. Of course there’s a lot of cleaning, but also repairs, resurfacing floors, and cleaning out air ducts. It really varies day to day. And I like that!

Q: Why is working at Sams different?

A: I’ve always enjoyed art and creating things, so I like how at Sams we make something nice out of something which may not have been so nice. There’s a lot of the satisfaction in leaving a place looking great.

Q: Do you have any memorable experiences from over the years at Sams?

A: Oh, there are lots of stories, but there’s one kind of funny one that sticks out to me. Once, I was working with another employee, kind of a fun, goofy guy, and we were working at the house of an older man, very no-nonsense, probably military. My coworker was downstairs, and I had gone outside, but he didn’t realize I had gone outside, so when he heard someone coming down the stairs, he jumped out to surprise me. Of course it wasn’t me, it was the owner, who just looked at him said “Practice your karate somewhere else.” At Sams we are a hardworking team, but we also are like a family, and a laugh or smile always brightens the day.

Q: When you’re not busy at work, what do you do for fun?

A: Most of my time is with my kids. I coach my kids’ soccer, which is great. Spending time with my family is where pretty much all my spare time goes!

We’re so glad Jake took some time to have this conversation with us, and we hope you enjoyed it too!

Get to Know Kim Simpson

This month we’re shining the light on our wonderful Kim Simpson. Kim is our Job Controller here, and she plays a big part in helping Sams run smoothly! Let’s take a moment to get to know her a bit better!

Q: How long have you been at Sams, and how did you first hear about the job?

A: Two years this month actually! I found the job on Craigslist believe it or not.

Q: What exactly do you do as a Job Controller?

A: A little bit of everything, from interviewing, payroll, and receivables, but my main job is to make sure our Technicians are taken care of, getting help if they need it, and getting where they need to be. I also assign our daily schedule to our Technicians and adjust accordingly to make sure everything is finished throughout the day.  I am on the phone a LOT!

Q: Why is working at Sams different?

A: We’re family here, with each other and with our customers. We treat our customers like family because that’s how we would want to be treated. We pride ourselves on customer service, and always go above and beyond to make sure our customers are completely satisfied with our service.

Q: What is it like to work here?

A: It can be crazy! But it’s also fun, even if it’s stressful sometimes. All in all, we joke and laugh and argue and laugh some more, just like family.  Jeff is great to work for. We all have families and understand when things come up from time to time, so we always try to accommodate everyone with their needs.

Q: Do you have any memorable experiences from over the years at Sams?

A: In the time that I have been here there have been a lot of things of course, but I remember knowing it was going to be a great place to work about the second of third week I was here. We had been having a lot, and I mean a LOT of rain, and we had thirty or so new flood calls within the work day. As the new girl, that was quite a bit of work that needed to get done! I had to call every single guy to help, and each and every one of them was so nice and helpful. They all had full days of work already, but with their help we got it all covered! They are truly some of the nicest guys to work with.

But maybe the most memorable experience is when I recently had a heart attack at work. I was in the bathroom, pants down and everything, but I was able to get them up and get that door opened! In all seriousness, I owe my life to Jessica. She called 911, and one of our techs was here and held my hand until help came. Everything went super-fast once the help came. I had a stent put in in 49 minutes, and I actually asked if I could go back to work. Needless to say, they told me no.

I had to stay a few days, but during that time I got a lot of texts from everyone at Sams making sure I was ok and that they were thinking of me. That’s what I mean when I say we are all family; we are all here for each other.

Q: When you’re not busy at work, what do you do for fun?

A: Well lately it’s been doctor’s orders to exercise and rest, but mostly I enjoy being with my loved ones and traveling. Life is short. Take the trip, buy that thing you’ve always wanted, and live life fully while you can.

We hope you enjoyed our conversation with Kim! As you can see, she’s a wonderful addition to our team, and we’re very thankful she was able to take the time out of her busy schedule so we could get to know her better.
