Did Fido Damage Your Carpet? Help is Here!

If you have any pets, it’s safe to say that your home has probably suffered from a few battle scars. Our four-legged friends are part of the family, and just like family, pets can become a pain. Humans are very hard on carpets as well, but pets tend to participate in the damage at times. Dogs can dig or chew holes in carpets, and cats use their claws on carpets and furniture to create the perfect scratch pad. The results of a scuffed surface are visible on carpets and furniture, but there are ways to repair without spending much time, effort and money. Lucky for you, there are a few options for repair.

Cut that Carpet

This is our go-to method for carpet repair. We will completely cut out the section of the carpet and replace it with a piece of donor carpet. Ideally, we would utilize leftover carpet cuts from your builder if possible. You can always source the carpet from the back of a closet or inconspicuous space that closely resembles the carpet that’s being replaced. This also works for holes, burns, stains (you know, potty stains, hair balls, etc.) and fading.

No Potty on the Pad

Going potty can become a problem when it’s the carpet that’s being utilized instead of the outdoors. Pets are creatures of habit, and if their owners aren’t aware of their pets routines, this can ruin the property. When these accidents happen many times on the carpet, the urine is absorbed through the surface and saturates underneath the pad. This tends to happens when your pet continues to go in the same spot. If the stain is still wet, cover the spot with paper towels or white cotton towel under the soiled area. Stand on this area until it’s barely damp then rinse clean with water and blotting dry. Follow up with our Sams “Outta Sight” Spot Remover and you’ll forget the stain ever existed! If the stain is already dried, we can detect pet areas using ulv lights to identify pet stains and determine what method will best remove that stubborn stain. Do you have a repeat offender of accidents in the house? We can go in, pull up the carpet to clean/seal  the subfloor, replace padding and clean and treat carpet as well as backing, and then restretch carpet.

Re-Seam

If your pet is one of those “diggers” trying to bury his bone or dig a hole to China, you might notice that the carpet is coming apart at the seam. We have a process that will bond the carpet seams back together! This will save you money on new carpet and will get your damaged carpet back together in no-time. That digging might be good exercise for your pet, but we don’t enjoy it happening on our carpet and furniture!

Get Rid of the Stink
You might get the carpet spotless, but notice that there is still a distinct odor. This just might be one of the most frustrating things! What you might not know is that we have several odor control services that will get your house smelling like a daisy (or at least not like we dog). We offer Enzyme treatments , which will quickly hunt down and kill odors in your home. We also use an Ozone machine that purifies the air in your home. Filters alone can’t stop many indoor pollutants for goodness sake, put down that can of air freshener.

Although these are useful tips, as always, Sams is here to help with any questions or concerns. Our team consists of trained technicians who performs proper inspections to identify the best course of action to clean stains, remove odors and repair the carpet. We are committed to excellence and professionalism, and we want you to have all the information you need to make educated decisions for your home. We’re here to help restore the value in your home, and we’re starting at the surface.

Feel Free to contact us at any time. Don’t let Fido’s accidents ruin your day, we can help!

To Steam, or Not to Steam: That is the Question…

So imagine you’re standing in the checkout line at the grocery store. You’re waiting for a price check on your three pound bag of kale when you spy a carpet steam cleaner in the corner, ready to be rented.
You think to yourself, “It’s been since Y2K that I’ve cleaned my carpets. Maybe it’s time.”

So you fork out the dough, cart the monstrosity home, call the neighbor kid over who wants to be an astrophysicist to get it running, sweat like the pilot in Airplane!, haul the thing back to the store, wait another fourteen hours for it to dry, only to realize three days later that that patch in the carpet that Fluffy has been using for a litter box might as well be used as a litter box.

The stain is still there.

A lot of times, the fruitless folly of self-carpet cleaning is the deciding factor to calling a professional to do a professional level job.

But now comes the big question: do you want steam cleaning, or dry cleaning?

First, you should know the difference. Steam cleaning is just what the name implies: the use of very hot water  helps remove the stains in a carpet. By using Truck-mounted equipment can produce a very hot water combined with pretreating carpet to break up stains and soil, rotary machines are also used for agitation, followed by a clean water rinse to leave your carpets fresh and residue free. The now dirty liquid is sucked out of your carpet into a waste system in the truck, leaving your carpets refreshed and clean.

Dry cleaning uses almost no liquid at all. Instead, solutions are spread onto the carpet, breaking down all dirt that it comes in contact with. After resting in the carpet, the residue is vacuumed up, leaving your carpet rejuvenated.

And now the $64,000 question: which one is better?

That depends. We know… two words you didn’t want to read. Steam cleaning is our go-to method at Sams Carpet that we use the most often, we do dry clean when necessary, especially for upholstery furniture. But really, it’s up to you!

If you are looking to get a light carpet cleaning on a Friday for that holiday party on Saturday and just need surface of the fibers cleaned. Dry cleaning could be a better bet as your carpets are instantaneously usable after a dry cleaning.

However, if you have crawling children, dirty feet running in your home, dogs, ferrets,  or Fluffy the incontinent cat running around, and need a thorough cleaning  you may want to choose the steam cleaning. The carpets may take longer to dry, (air movement can be used to dry carpets quicker  but the overall results there is no comparison. You can check out your carpet’s manufacturer recommendations to assist your decision and you may find that most manufacturers prefer hot water extraction cleaning.
Regardless of which method you choose, Sams Carpet Cleaning and Repairs has you covered. For over 30 years, Sams has been the leader in serving our commercial and residential customers. We love what we do, and we are committed to your satisfaction. Call us today for all of your carpet and upholstery cleaning needs!

Getting Your Inner Picasso Out of Your Carpet…

There are many instances of people uttering famous last words.

“I regret that I have but one life to live for my country.”

“Say goodnight, Gracie.”

“We don’t need to hire a professional painter.”

Sure you don’t. Except now, not only do your walls look like a topographical map, but your carpet has the appearance of the floor of a kindergarten class after “learning to paint by numbers”. Before you hatch your plot to commit grievous self-flagellation, it might not be as bad as you think.

Like most stains, it’s always easier to clean paint if it’s still wet. For a fresh spill, splat, or splotch, put wet rags or paper towels around the paint stain. Then, use more towels to soak up as much paint as possible. Once most of it is up, continue to blot with warm water over and over until the paint is removed.
But like life, things don’t always happen in a best-case scenario. Maybe you’ve decided to get that last bit of painting done as you’re running out the door for a hot date, and you have to leave that fresh lake of Mustard Yellow until dawn.

It could happen.

Well, then you have choices depending on what type of paint you’ve used to pretty up your abode. If you’ve had the good sense to use latex paint, you’re golden. For starters, you’re going to have to re-saturate the paint. Use hot water to achieve this. Once you’ve introduced the H2O, lay a rag over the stain and wait for a few minutes. Then blot up the moisture over and over with a white rag or paper towel until the paint is removed from the area. Only start to scrub gently when the vast majority of the paint is already removed. This should remove the fine bits of paint in between the threads. Just be patient.

Of course, you might have a Da Vinci fetish for your woodwork, and oil-based paint is your go-to. Again, if it’s wet, it’s easier. But let’s not think easy at this point. You’re going to need something stronger than water. A common suggestion is using rubbing alcohol with a white cloth, paper towel, or cotton ball to blot up as much of the stain as you can. You may also want to blot in one direction so that the stain won’t have a tendency to spread.

If that doesn’t fully work, the heavier gun use a store bought spot remover that is made for carpets.  Using household remedies such as dishwashing soap can damage the fiber of the carpet. (If the product does not say it’s made for carpet, there’s a reason why!) Mix, and apply using a spray bottle. Gently blot the area, like there’s no tomorrow. Rinse with a small amount of water, and then stack paper towels on top to soak up the liquid. Keep rinsing until you see no signs of soap. Again always test a area making sure carpet is safe.

If you think this sounds like a lot of work, you’re right. And if you have a bit of trepidation about tackling something like this by yourself, you’re not alone. And that’s why we’re here. At Sams Carpet, we use an environmentally friendly cleaning system. Using the latest spot removal technology available, we pre-treat your carpet for all stains, including paint. We then use our powerful extraction cleaning system, which allows us to thoroughly clean all sides of the carpet fiber. A fresh-water rinse is also applied to remove any residue. This helps to keep your carpet cleaner… longer. If all else fails Sams Carpet Specializes in Carpet Patching and Carpet Repairs as well.

Here’s a testimonial from a client who experienced a paint disaster of her own, and gave us a call!

On Easter Sunday a full gallon of green latex paint fell down our stairs and landed on our living room carpet and nearby chair. We cleaned it as much as we could with a home carpet cleaner, but it looked terrible, and I thought we would have to replace it. The next day I called your company and was pleased to get a cleaning scheduled for the next day. The two men that came worked tirelessly to clean the stairs, carpet, and chair. I am very happy to say that the paint came out! I couldn’t be happier with the professional service that we received. I look forward to be able to refer your company to anyone!

Kathy S.|St. Peters, MO

So go ahead and paint, Monet, and feel free to express your creativity on the canvas of life. And while we can’t tell you what colors to paint your domicile, rest easy that we can get that Chartreusey Lavender out of your carpet most of the time.

Back to School with Lindenwood University

Sams has been partners with Lindenwood University for many years. We help them get ready for the return of students and faculty as summer comes to an end, as well as take care of anything that may come up throughout the school year.

We at Sams respond to any and all of Lindenwood’s carpet needs, like an emergency water leak or carpet repair. Lindenwood University has worked incredibly hard over the last number of years to achieve such high standards for a clean and put-together campus and we at Sams are here to help them maintain that standard.

As summer begins to come to a close, Lindenwood University calls on Sams to help them get their housing units ready for the school year. This includes all of the dorms, apartments, and houses that Lindenwood has as housing options for their students. The University has approximately 600 units to prepare for the students and it usually takes about 4-5 weeks to complete the entire project. The Sams team is responsible for preparing all of the carpets clean and ready to go for the return of Lindenwood’s students.

Lindenwood University calls on the Sams team for more than just carpet maintenance in the dorms. We take care of all of the buildings on campus that have carpet, including the Scheidegger Center for the Arts, Spellmann Center, Evans Commons, and faculty and staff offices. Sams also responds to any carpet needs Lindenwood may have at any of their other locations off the main campus, like in Wentzville and West County.

Lindenwood University continues to choose Sams year after year to maintain their facilities for a number of reasons; one of which is that we are a local company. They know they can count on us to get the job done right. The Sams team is fully committed to Lindenwood at this time of year to help their facilities be the best they can be.

Lindenwood isn’t the only university that Sams works with at this time of year. We help Maryville and Washington University prepare some of their buildings for the upcoming school year, as well. We at Sams are dedicating to helping our local schools and businesses shine for their students and staff.

How can Sams help you with the carpet in your home or business this time of year? Contact us today and we’ll be happy to assist you!
